This study of a cat is attributed to Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita, who was born in Tokyo and moved to France in 1913.
He became famous for his paintings of women and cats in a fusion of Japanese and Western styles. Durham University’s Oriental Museum holds a significant collection of some 5,000 Japanese objects. This picture helps deepen their holdings of works which span both Eastern and Western traditions, and will be a valuable teaching resource for school and university programmes.
