American artist Deborah Roberts makes work that explores Black identity, femininity and childhood.

Using collaged elements cut from magazines and photographs, she constructs fictional characters that challenge stereotypical portrayals of Black bodies.

Untitled shows a composite figure of a young Black girl, her face turned confidently towards the viewer. The image is rich with allusions, including references to Dada, Surrealism and African culture.

Manchester Art Gallery, where Untitled now resides, is currently working to increase the representation of Black and female artists in its holdings.
