Penlee House Gallery & Museum collects art and objects that are associated with Penzance and the surrounding West Cornwall area.
The gallery’s holdings are particularly strong in work by members of the Newlyn School – the art colony that thrived in the fishing port and the nearby villages between the 1880s and the 1940s.
Born in New Zealand, Harry Rountree emigrated to England in 1901. After settling in London, he became a popular illustrator for magazines and children’s books. He also painted scenes
of country and seaside life. Rountree retired to St Ives and died at the West Cornwall Hospital, Penzance, in 1950.
