Castle Drogo was commissioned from Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1910 by Julius Drewe, who had made a fortune as a young man by establishing the grocery stores, Home and Colonial. Both client and architect had a romantic vision of a great medieval fortress.
Provenance
Acquired from the office of Sir Edwin Lutyens on his death in 1944 by Mr A Neville Holt, sold at Christie's, 14 December 1982.
