A study for the large painting first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1884.
As the colours of the draperies, the floor, and the wall are different from the final work, it seems likely that this shows the artist's first thoughts on composition. This small study is very Whistlerian in its careful colour harmonies, illustrating the fact that Moore and Whistler were friends who, for a time, worked in very close association.
