Around this time his works were influenced by the work of the French 'Nabis' painter Edouard Vuillard. GilmanÂ’s understanding of Post-Impressionism soon exceeded that of his fellow artist Sickert and he began to use stronger colour, thicker impasto and compositional designs almost claustrophobic in their rigidity. This work was purchased from Mr Bevan, the collector son of Robert Bevan, the Camden Town painter.
