It may once have hung in the centre of a roodscreen that has now been lost. Most of the sculpture has disintegrated over the years and the head and foot survived only as shells, kept together by gesso and paint. The sculpture shows Christ already dead, the eyes closed and the face at peace. The toes, in contrast, are curled under as if in pain. The forms of both fragments are elegant, with the hair centrally parted and swept back in stylised strands, the moustache long and neat and the eyes and chin enlarged and angular.
Provenance
