The Pier Arts Centre in Stromness houses a remarkable collection of 20th-century British art including works by Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson.

Founded in 1979, the Pier Arts Centre in Stromness takes care of a significant collection of British art donated by its founder, Margaret Gardiner (1904-2005). Major works by prominent 20th century figures, including Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson, alongside leading contemporary artists, such as Olafur Eliason can be found in the collection.

Although a small gallery, the Pier Arts Centre is accredited as a Recognised Collection of National Significance to Scotland. They regularly loan artworks to major exhibitions across the globe and partner with Tate to exchange programmes, ideas and skills. They also curate an exciting exhibition and events programme, and act a a focal point for the local artistic community, offering a valuable library and archive, and a programme of educational and outreach activities for a range of community groups.
