Spend the summer holidays at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse!
From 20 July – 3 September, we’ll have plenty of farm-focused fun and activities all about 2024 temporary exhibition, Making the Rounds: stories of workhouse nurses told in textiles.
Haymaking Week
Gressenhall is kicking the summer off with a week celebrating haymaking, wildflowers and cereal crops, including a special scything day at the wildflower meadow on 24 July (22 – 28 July).
Go Wild Wednesdays
On Wednesdays in the summer holidays, families with younger children can enjoy extra activities and play stations across the site (24 & 31 July, 7, 14, 21 & 28 August), with led activities including:
Storytime & Gallery Exploration at 11-11:45am, recommended for under 5s
Woodland Wednesdays at 1-3pm, recommended for children under 12
Sunlit Sundays
On 4 & 18 August, visitors can seek a little sunlight at Gressenhall – whatever the weather! Inspired by sister site Norwich Castle’s temporary exhibition Sunlight: Roger Ackling, Gressenhall will host nature-focused activities accessible to all the family – from found artworks and charcoal drawings to wildlife walks and exploring anthotypes!
Making the Rounds: Meet the Nurses tours
Take a tour of Gressenhall and hear the stories of the real women who worked on site caring for people over the past two hundred years. As a workhouse, Gressenhall was home to some of the most vulnerable people in Norfolk society – and it would take a team of staff to keep them well and safe. From the early 19th century to the late 1940s, a Gressenhall guide will take you on a trip in time to briefly explore the lives of the workhouse nurses and the different experiences they had when working within this important profession. Tours last approximately 45 minutes with additional time for questions at the end. Tours take place on the ground floor of the museum, and visitors are then welcome to explore 2024’s temporary exhibition, ‘Making the Rounds: Stories of Workhouse Nurses told in Textiles’. (23 & 31 July, 3:30-4:30pm – more August dates TBA)
