Van Gogh House Workshop: Writing for Self-Expression

9 November 2024
10:00 AM – 12:00 AM

Join us with Deborah Walker for a workshop exploring how expressive writing can help us navigate our thoughts and feelings.

Writing has long been a tool for navigating the varying moods and cycles of our lives. Whether you're living with mental illness or are simply experiencing the universal human struggle, creative, or expressive writing can help to give form to the shifting weather of our internal landscapes. Writing can help us make sense of our thoughts and feelings, develop resilience and foster connection. Please join us for this very human event in Van Gogh House London, a special venue where Van Gogh spent some of his early years writing. Through a series of discussions and simple exercises we will explore our thoughts and feelings, recognising the universality of what we often convince ourselves is an individual experience.

Deborah Walker is Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at Northeastern University London and Royal Literary Fund Fellow currently in post at Reading University. Deborah specialises in Creative Non-Fiction, drawing on a writing career spanning three decades. Deborah has been a travel writer, novelist, ghost writer, editor, entertainment and commercial content writer, literary critic and Associate Fellow of the Royal Literary Fund, and through her work with the Royal Literary Fund Social Sector Programme has launched a nationwide Expressive Writing course in partnership with NHS Recovery Colleges to support people struggling with their mental health.

This event is part of a series of events run in partnership with Northeastern University and Being Human: Festival of the Humanities.
