Ruth Mallory was born in Godalming to Arts and Crafts ‘royalty’. Her father, Hugh Thackery Turner, designed Godalming’s Titanic Memorial, her mother May founded the Women’s Guild with May Morris. When she married the young Charterhouse teacher George Mallory in 1914 her world changed for ever. Kate’s talk reveals that Ruth was an accomplished artist in her own right, but also a climber. She could partner her husband and learned to lead climbs, qualifying her as a founder member of the Pinnacle Club, the first all-female rock-climbing club in the UK.In this talk, Kate Nicholson takes you through Ruth’s life in a series of climbing pitches – up Everest and, as the Godalming Museum exhibition suggests, Beyond Everest to Ruth’s future. No need for crampons or an ice axe, but bring an open mind.
