A photographic journey through joy at Hestercombe Gardens, based near Taunton in Somerset.
Explore The Lighter Side, a unique exhibition that delves into the joy and wellbeing that Hestercombe has inspired for over a century. This collection of photographs chronicles the sense of peace and happiness that the estate continues to instil in its visitors.
At the heart of this exhibition are the historical images, capturing moments from the late 19th century through to 1951, when the Portman family, their friends, servants, and estate workers experienced the mental health benefits of a simple, quiet life in the verdant Somerset countryside. These early images speak to the estate’s long-standing role as a retreat for wellbeing.
In 1954, the arrival of the Somerset Fire Brigade ushered in a new era of access. Both permanent and visiting staff discovered the tranquil pleasure of lunchtime walks and leisure pursuits in the peaceful grounds. From the 1970s until 2006, as the Formal and Landscape Gardens were restored and Hestercombe opened to the public, this "Paradise Restored" was shared with all.
In a world that often feels hurried and chaotic, Hestercombe serves as a testament to the restorative power of nature, community, and shared experiences. Through it all, Hestercombe has hosted significant celebrations, fostered lasting friendships, entertained families, and delighted children, all while being cared for by custodians who honour its timeless landscape and legacy.
