Arthur Neal exhibiting in the East Wing Gallery.
Ultramarine rippling at the edge of the strand fades to dusky twilight meetings and partings; red folds of the linen dress resonate to the ivory of the Ukrainian pianist’s hands; infinite shades of green and ochre span the seasons of his garden.
Across fifty years Arthur Neal has progressively reimagined the use of colour to interpret reality, and this exhibition takes us on a journey from Camberwell and his association with the New English Art Club to pieces a hairline from the abstract.
Along the way we see a prize-winning oil exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery alongside works from numerous solo and group shows and those never seen before, and come back to the locations’ Dorset homeland with Arthur’s etchings taken from and inspired by the literary giant Thomas Hardy.
