A unique meeting of an iconic artist and a beloved author, 250 years on.
Marking the 250th anniversaries of the births of JMW Turner and Jane Austen, this ground-breaking exhibition imagines an encounter between the two cultural icons. Bringing together their works for the first time, it explores their shared fascination with the British country house and its landscape.
Turner’s celebrated paintings of Harewood appear alongside a first edition of Sense and Sensibility, as well as rarely seen artefacts, including period costume, artistic tools and historical documents. Contemporary artworks and creative writing also reflect on how their legacies continue to shape perceptions of the country house today. This exhibition offers a compelling look at Regency society through two of its keenest observers.
