Abbey Pumping Station
With a National Art Pass you get
Abbey Pumping Station tells the story of Leicester’s Victorian sewerage challenge and showcases local technological innovations past and present.
In the Victorian era, Leicester's rapid expansion presented a real problem for public health; how to supply clean water and process the sewerage of a growing city. The Abbey Pumping Station not only tells the story behind this challenge, it also houses the solution: four enormous engines, built in 1891 to pump waste to a new treatment works.
Alongside Victorian toilets and water pumps powered by paraffin engines are galleries celebrating machines made in Leicester, and displays charting the early days of motorised transport. Abbey Pumping House is even home to a rare collection of vintage vehicles, including a 'hansom cab' and chip van.
There's a technology-themed children's play area, museum shop and sensory garden & visitors shouldn't miss the outdoor exhibits on the museum's extensive grounds.
