Explore social history at Blaise Museum, an 18th-century mansion with beautiful rooms, galleries and collections of toys, costumes and domestic contraptions.

Housed within Blaise Castle House, Blaise Museum, with its unique collection and grand setting, offers a captivating journey through Bristol’s social history.

The Picture Room

Complete with classical portico and domed glass ceiling, the Picture Room displays fine art pieces by William James Müller, James Curnock, Charles Branwhite, James Baker Pyne and Henry Hewitt, against the backdrop of red flock wallpaper.

Everyday objects, extraordinary stories

The Bristol at Home galleries offer insight into how daily domestic life has changed over the last 300 years. Explore Victorian contraptions like bathtubs and toilets, alongside tools used in kitchens and laundry rooms, and even see what an early vacuum cleaner looked like. There is also a toy collection ranging from the 18th to 20th century featuring dolls houses, toy trains and the traditional Bristol pedlar doll.

Fashion Through the Ages

A highlight of the Blaise Museum is its extensive costume collection of around 10.000 items, spanning from the 1730s to the present day. Admire the elegance of dresses from the 1800s, explore the evolution of footwear from dancing slippers to platform shoes, and discover the fascinating world of fans, hats, and corsages that completed fashionable ensembles.

A Grand Estate Awaits

Beyond the museum walls you can explore the 650 acres of surrounding parkland, complete with woodlands and lily ponds. The wider Blaise Estate is also home to a dairy garden, cafe, play area and cricket pitch, among many other facilities.
