Brantwood
With a National Art Pass you get
John Ruskin's legacy and inspiration is celebrated at the Victorian writer and artist's former home at Brantwood in the Lake District.
Overlooking Coniston Water in Cumbria, Brantwood is most famous for being the home of John Ruskin, a prominent Victorian polymath, for the last 28 years of his life. Today it serves as a museum dedicated to the life and work of the writer, artist, critic, social reformer, and conservationist. Filled with his furniture, art, and personal treasures the house retains the character of its eccentric resident.
Ruskin and horticulture
Explore the estate's 250 acres of beautiful grounds, including mountainside gardens, woodlands, and lakeshore meadows, showcasing Ruskin's ideas on horticulture and land management. Don’t miss the Zig-Zaggy a mythological garden based on Dante’s Divine Comedy, which Ruskin admired hugely.
Art and Exhibitions
The house itself contains a collection of paintings and decorative objects that Ruskin amassed during his lifetime. The Blue Gallery showcases both historic and contemporary art related to Ruskin and his circle, while the Severn Studio Gallery features work by contemporary artists inspired by the natural beauty of the Lake District.
A legacy of inspiration
Brantwood Trust, which was established in 1951, ensures that Brantwood continues to be a place of learning and inspiration today. The Trust organizes educational programs, lectures, concerts, and special events throughout the year, keeping Ruskin's legacy alive for future generations.
For fans of flora and fauna - Did you know Brantwood is co-home to the Cumbria Wisteria Collection, one of only three in the entire country?
