Did you know?
Canterbury Roman Museum owes its existence to the Luftwaffe's bombing raids during World War II. When excavations began under shops destroyed by the bombing, Roman townhouse remains were revealed. These included a hypocaust (under-floor heating system), wall paintings, and a mosaic corridor. The site was no longer just the isolated pavement mosaic unearthed by chance a few years earlier, sparking the creation of the museum.
