Chirk Castle
With a National Art Pass you get
Chirk Castle is a 700-year-old fortress turned stately home, with award-winning gardens and stunning Welsh views.
Chirk Castle is a Grade I listed monument in Wales, boasting a rich history dating back to the late 13th century. Originally built by King Edward I as part of his campaign to subdue the Welsh princes, the imposing stone structure overlooks the confluence of the Rivers Dee and Ceiriog. After serving as an administrative centre for centuries, the castle was purchased by the Myddelton family in 1593. It remained their private residence until 1981 when it was transferred to the National Trust.
Adam Tower
The castle’s core retains the defensive features of a medieval fortress, these can be seen at the Adam Tower. Discover the medieval garderobes (toilets) and murder holes, and venture down into the two-level dungeons.
King’s bedroom
Explore lavishly decorated rooms adorned with portraits, antique furniture, and a collection of weaponry. See where King Charles I might have slept when he visited in 1645. In contrast, Cromwell Hall displays English Civil War 17th century arms and armour on the walls.
Award-winning gardens
Complementing the grandeur of the castle are the award-winning gardens spread over 5.5 acres. Explore manicured lawns, serene rose gardens, the hawk house built 1854 and an 18th century ha-ha. There is also a kitchen garden growing produce available to buy at the castle’s shop.
The Battle of Crogen circular walk from Chirk Castle takes in a section of Offa’s Dyke, an ancient earthwork marking the historic boundary between England and Wales.
