The former home of Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, Dimbola Museum holds the largest permanent display of her work and equipment in the UK.

Dimbola on the Isle of Wight, was once the home of a photographic pioneer Julia Margaret Cameron. From 1860 to 1875, this grand house served as her creative hub. Today, it's a museum dedicated to her life's work and a platform for contemporary photography.

Photographic memories

The museum boasts a permanent collection that explores Cameron’s innovative techniques and artistic vision. You'll find her iconic portraits of famous figures like Charles Darwin and Alfred Lord Tennyson, alongside ethereal close-ups that capture the essence of her subjects.

Behind the camera

The museum houses vintage cameras, including a large dry plate camera which is over 100 years old. You can also look round Cameron’s bedroom, which has been recreated using period furnishings and decoration, and find displays about her photographic techniques along with an audio commentary.

Contemporary exhibitions

Beyond celebrating Cameron's work, the gallery embraces contemporary photography, hosting a program of changing exhibitions featuring established and emerging photographers. Exhibitors in recent years have included Annie Leibovitz, Chris Packham and Terry O’Neill.

Beyond photography

Don't miss the Victorian dress-up room, where you can channel your inner Victorian and capture a fun photo memento. Meanwhile music fans can explore the permanent display dedicated to the history of the Isle of Wight music festival, featuring original memorabilia.
