The last authentic Arts and Crafts interior in Britain, Emery Walker's House is thought to have original Morris & Co wallpaper throughout.

The tall, terraced house on the River Thames at Hammersmith was home to printer, photographer, and typographer Emery Walker from 1903 until his death in 1933. Unlike many historic houses that are recreated, Emery Walker's House remains largely untouched, offering a genuine look into a real Arts and Crafts home.

An Arts and Crafts abode

Once inside the house you'll be transported back to the Arts and Crafts era. The interiors are a beautiful example of the movement's principles. The walls are adorned with hand-printed Morris & Co wallpaper, with furniture designed by Philip Webb, alongside Middle-Eastern rugs, and Chinese and Moroccan ceramics.

William Morris connection

Walker and Morris were good friends as can be seen by some of the more personal items to be found in the house, such as library chair, a lock of his hair and a pair of his spectacles, and an uncut woodblock from the Kelmscott Press which was founded by Morris and Walker.

Guided tour

Access to the house is by guided tour, which needs to be pre-booked. Experienced guides will accompany you through the main rooms in the house and (weather permitting) the garden, bringing to life the history of this unique Arts & Crafts home.

Follow the Arts and Craft Hammersmith Riverside Walk, downloadable from the Emery Walker House website, which includes a visit to the William Morris Society, which is a ten minute walk from the house.
