Essex Collection of Art from Latin America (ESCALA)
The Essex Collection of Art from Latin America, or ESCALA, at the University of Essex is the UK's most complete public resource for art from Latin America.
ESCALA opened with founding donation by Brazilian student Charles Cosac in 1994 and boasts over 700 artworks from Latin America, spanning various media, with a focus on creations from the 1960s to the present day. Through its diverse collection, educational programs, and collaborative events, ESCALA serves as a unique gateway to appreciating the artistic riches of Latin America.
Exhibitions and sculpture
ESCALA offers a dynamic program of exhibitions throughout the year. These exhibitions are held at the university's Art Exchange gallery, providing a platform for established and emerging Latin American artists. Outdoor sculptures form the collection can be seen in the campus grounds, and works of art are on long-term display in the Albert Sloman Library.
Teaching and resources
For those seeking deeper exploration, ESCALA boasts a dedicated Teaching and Research space, alongside a Documentation Centre and a library brimming with Latin American art resources. The collection frequently joins forces with academics from various departments to host lunchtime talks. These talks offer fresh perspectives on the artworks and the social issues they raise.
In 2007 ESCALA was shortlisted for the Art Fund International scheme. Although it was not among the five consortia who were eventually chosen, the application led to the plan to convert an existing building on the University campus into a home for the collection.
