Goole Museum
Goole Museum explores the history of the East Yorkshire port town with ship models, local exhibits, and even a recreated hair salon.
Nestled above Goole Library, the museum offers a fascinating exploration of the town's rich heritage. Through permanent and temporary exhibits, visitors can delve into Goole's maritime, industrial, and social past.
Maritime models
The permanent galleries showcase Goole's transformation from a small agricultural centre to the UK’s most inland port town. The Ship Wall is a particular highlight, featuring scale models of ships built by Goole's own shipbuilders. One such model is of Sir Malcolm Campbell's famous yacht, the Bluebird.
Reuben Chappell collection
The museum houses the largest collection of marine portraits by Goole-born artist Reuben Chappell outside of a national collection. Chappell is Britain's best-known 'Pierhead’ painter whose work offers a unique perspective on maritime life in the town during the early 20th century.
Temporary exhibitions
Alongside the permanent collection, the museum curates a dynamic program of temporary exhibitions. These exhibitions typically change around ten times a year, showcasing a diverse range of art, crafts, and local social history. There are also reconstructions of the Aire & Calder diver inspecting the base of the dock wall, a Goole hair-dressers salon and a 1950s boys bedroom and a range of hands on activities for children.
Whether you're interested in local artists or historical events, there's always something new to discover at Goole Museum.
