Read rare books dating from 1476 to 2001 at the historic Innerpeffray Library in rural Perthshire, Scotland.

An innovative idea when it was founded in 1680, Innerpeffray Library was the first free public lending library in Scotland. Today, the three main collections here include handwritten work by Robert Burns, and the first printed recipe for haggis.

A book lovers treasure trove

The library houses a vast array of rare books, manuscripts, and historical documents, with the founder, David Drummond’s original collection focusing on law, politics, gardening, and the ‘pursuits of a gentleman’. With approximately 3500 books in the current collection, mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries, subjects covered include theology, history, witchcraft, philosophy and the Scottish Enlightenment. You can request to handle and look at any of the books.

Beyond the library

While the library itself is the main attraction, the surrounding grounds are open for exploration and enjoyment. See rare wall paintings in the graveyard of the medieval St Mary’s Chapel, or wander the tranquil gardens. You can also follow the library’s Heritage Trail with markers telling the story of Innerpeffray through the centuries, from its Roman road to the 20th century.

Events and activities

Host to exhibitions throughout the year, the library also organises a wide range of events such as guided tours, educational workshops, and special events with a literary theme.
