Visit Jane Austen's House in Hampshire, where the famous author lived from 1809 until her death in 1817, during which time she wrote most of her novels.

Jane Austen's House is a literary treasure trove for anyone who cherishes her novels. Opened in 1949 it has been a place to connect with the author's life and works for over 75 years.

An author's home

Stepping through the doors of Jane Austen's House is like stepping back into the early 19th century. The house where she lived with her mother and sister is a charming 17th-century cottage, meticulously preserved to reflect the Regency era. Explore the various rooms, including the drawing-room, where Jane likely spent evenings with her family, and her personal writing table. Discover Austen's belongings, from her jewellery and clothing, to letters and first editions of her novels.

Interactive activities

The curators have incorporated interactive elements to enhance the visitor experience. Try your hand at traditional garden games enjoyed during Austen's time, or even participate in Regency dress-up and bonnet designing, or join the monthly online Virtual Book Club. Their are also family fun trails and a play area too.

Did you know?

At the time of her death, Austen was working on a new novel titled Sanditon. Fragments of the manuscript can be found within the house's collection.
