Kingston Lacy is a lavish Italianate palace in the heart of Dorset, with gardens, parkland and a rich Bankes family history.
Built in the 17th century for the Bankes family, Kingston Lacy a stunning example of Italian-inspired architecture. Now owned by the National Trust, the house offers a glimpse into a life of luxury, with a fascinating history and beautiful surroundings to explore.
Historic house
In the mid 19th century, the explorer, adventurer and collector William John Bankes set about embellishing and transforming his 17th-century family home, creating a series of lavish interiors suitable for a growing art collection. The grand rooms are opulently decorated, with intricate plasterwork, carved fireplaces, and rich fabrics.
Art collection
The house boasts an impressive art collection, featuring works by famous European artists such as Rubens, Van Dyck, Titian and Brueghel. The house is a miniature ‘national gallery’ for the South West, and also includes Bankes' collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts, the largest private collection in the UK.
The Spanish Room
One highlights is the Spanish Room, created to display William John Bankes’ collection of Spanish paintings. The room comprises of a gilded, coffered Venetian ceiling, painted leather wall panels, and decorative surfaces.
Gardens and parkland
The estate boasts expansive gardens designed for leisurely strolls and exploration. Immerse yourself in the tranquility of the Japanese Garden, complete with an authentic tea house, or pack a picnic to enjoy on the beautiful south lawn. Children will love exploring the expansive grounds, with plenty of space to run around, whilst designated play areas cater for younger visitors.
