Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle houses an impressive permanent collection of British and European fine and decorative arts as well as a growing collection of contemporary art.
Opened in 1904, the Laing Gallery houses an impressive collection of art and sculpture in a beautiful Baroque building with Art Nouveau flourishes. The building itself is a Grade II listed structure, and was financed by a gift from a local wine merchant, Alexander Laing.
Diverse collection
The galley’s collection spans centuries and artistic movements. Works by J M W Turner, Paul Gauguin, and Stanley Spencer share space with dynamic landscapes by John Martin and sculptures by Henry Moore. A large decorative art collection features Beilby enamelled glass, Sowerby glass, Newcastle silver, Maling ceramics and North East pottery, as well as Japanese prints.

The Laing Art Gallery aspires to be a place for everyone. Entry to the core exhibitions is free, making it an accessible and affordable cultural experience. The on-site cafe is a great place to relax and reflect on the art you've seen, while the gift shop offers a curated selection of art-related souvenirs.
Did you know?
In 2024 Laing Art Gallery was the ‘Number 10 Museum in Residence’ with nine artworks from the collection on display in 10 Downing Street. The pieces included 20th century works by Edward Dickey, Victor Pasmore and Norman Cornish.
