Layer Marney Tower is England's tallest Tudor gatehouse, and a dramatic presence in the Essex landscape, with panoramic views towards the River Blackwater and beyond.

Layer Marney Tower is a unique blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty. If you're interested in Tudor history, stunning views, or after a relaxing family outing, Layer Marney Tower is well worth a visit.

Unfinished palace

Construction began on the palace in the 1520s by Henry, 1st Lord Marney, whowas Henry VIII’s Lord Privy Seal. Lord Marney envisioned a grand palace, but sadly, his and his son's deaths left the project unfinished. Today visitors can explore the building and discover the history of the house and the Marney family.

Climb the tower

Layer Marney Tower offers a glimpse into the lives of the Tudor aristocracy. The grand scale of the gatehouse reflects Lord Marney's desire to display his wealth and status. The intricate terracotta detailing on the facade is a remarkable example of Tudor craftsmanship. Today, visitors can climb its many floors for panoramic views of the Essex countryside and the River Blackwater.

Beyond the gatehouse

Beautiful gardens provide a tranquil space to wander, while the on-site church houses the Marney family tombs. A children's play area and a charming tea room round off the proceedings, making Layer Marney Tower a perfect destination for a family outing.
