Marble Hill House
With a National Art Pass you get
Explore Marble Hill House, a beautiful Palladian villa set in 66 acres of outstanding riverside parkland near Richmond in West London.
Built between 1724 and 1729, the exquisite Neo-Palladian villa soon became a trendsetter and blueprint for similar Georgian villas, and even plantation houses in America. Now under the care of English Heritage, Marble Hill House has been recently restored, giving an insight into the wealthy Georgian lifestyle of its residents.
The mistress of the house
Marble Hill was built as a retreat from court life by Henrietta Howard, who was fascinatingly both mistress to the Prince of Wales (later George II) and a woman of the bedchamber to his wife Princess Caroline. A popular member of the royal court, Howard saw Marble Hill become a meeting place for the cultural, intellectual and political elite of 18th-century society. The freshly curated displays tell the story of this remarkable woman and her times.
Explore picturesque grounds
Wander through restored gardens, where meticulous landscaping and carefully chosen plants recreate the idyllic setting envisioned by Henrietta Howard. The outdoor spaces are also used for a range of community events including yoga and guided walks.
Fun for all ages
Children will delight in following the Fop the Dog’s family trail, where they can learn about the house and its history through interactive activities. Try on hats in Little Henrietta’s bedroom or play Georgian games such as battledore and shuttlecock or nine-pin bowling on the expansive lawns. A new playground and plenty of open space provide ample opportunities for energetic exploration, while grown-ups grab a quick bite at the Coach House Café.
