Margate Caves
With a National Art Pass you get
Discover a world of mystery underground in the atmospheric Margate Caves on the Kent coast.
Once an Iron Age settlement, a working mine and since 2019, a modern visitor attraction, the caves sit on the border of Margate and Cliftonville. Comprising a community building, café, shop, exhibition spaces and an array of underground nooks and crannies, there’s plenty to discover.
What to see
Explore the winding tunnels and learn about the mining process and the geological formations that created these unique spaces.
Art on the walls
The walls are adorned with intriguing murals and graffiti, some dating back to the Georgian era, providing a glimpse into the past. Additionally, the caves have served as a canvas for contemporary artists, with installations and exhibitions.
Events at the caves
Margate Caves host events and workshops throughout the year, catering to the interests of young and old alike. Look out for special events and activities for children during the school holidays. The caves also run an outreach programme for schools and local groups, as well as providing opportunities and training for local residents.
Please note the caves are not accessible to wheelchair users or to anyone with significant mobility problems. Access is via two sets of stairs, both with handrails, followed by a steep, narrow, low-ceilinged tunnel. Once in the Caves, the floor is uneven and there are steep steps to access certain areas.
