Mellerstain House
With a National Art Pass you get
One of Scotland's finest stately homes, Mellerstain House is a unique example of Adam design, boasting exquisite interiors adorned with paintings by Gainsborough and Van Dyck.
Mellerstain House is a unique collaboration between two generations of the Adam family. Construction began in 1725 with William Adam designing the east and west wings. Work stalled for nearly half a century before Robert Adam, William's son, took over and designed the grand central block we see today. The result is a harmonious blend of styles and is famously celebrated as one of Robert Adam’s finest works.
Inside the house
The grand interiors are meticulously decorated, boasting exquisite plasterwork, ornate ceilings, and grand fireplaces. Fine paintings, including works by Dutch and Flemish masters adorn the walls and period furniture, china, and embroidery fill the rooms. You may also discover personal letters and estate records offering a further glimpse into the lives of the families who called Mellerstain home.
