MIMA brings together Middlesbrough's art collections and hosts temporary exhibitions of fine art and craft from 1900 to the present.

With its diverse collection, engaging programs, and commitment to community involvement, MIMA is a cultural hub that continues to play a vital role in the artistic landscape of Middlesbrough. MIMA is also a member of Plus Tate, a dynamic network of visual arts organisations across the UK that exchange ideas, knowledge, skills and resources and collaborate on joint programmes.

The Middlesborough Collection

Comprising over 2,350 works of art and craft made by British and international artists from the mid-1800s to today, the collection at MIMA encompasses post-Second World War British painting, contemporary American drawing, 20th century British ceramics, contemporary European jewellery and 21st century international installation. It includes pieces by L S Lowry, Bridget Riley, Duncan Grant, Bernard Leach, Lucie Rie and Dorothy Hogg.

Temporary exhibitions

Alongside these established names, MIMA presents a dynamic program of temporary exhibitions featuring a wide range of contemporary artists and movements, featuring photography, sculpture, and installations.

Engaging with the community

The institute actively seeks to connect with the Middlesbrough community through a variety of programs and initiatives. MIMA works with artists and communities on projects that raise debate, open discussion and generate new possibilities, addressing urgent issues such as climate change and inequality.
