Mottisfont
With a National Art Pass you get
Set in glorious grounds alongside the River Test, Mottisfont is a historic priory and estate in Hampshire with gardens, art exhibitions, and a rose collection.
Nestled in the Test Valley, Mottisfont Abbey blends history, art, and nature. Originally a medieval priory, it transitioned into a grand house and is now cared for by the National Trust.
Historic house
The house at Mottisfont Abbey has undergone many transformations over the centuries. Today it reflects the era of its last owner, society hostess and arts patron Maud Russell. Don’t miss the Whistler Room, with spectacular trompe l’oeil murals by Rex Whistler. See if you can find the secret message left by Whistler on what was to become his final work before being killed in the Second World War.
Modern art collection
Mottisfont houses an impressive collection of 20th-century art, gifted by the artist Derek Hill, in memory of his friendship with Maud Russell. Discover works by L S Lowry, Barbara Hepworth, Graham Sutherland, Gwen and Augustus John and Degas. Alongside the permanent collection, captivating exhibitions of contemporary art are displayed in the top-floor gallery.
Gardens and grounds
Mottisfont’s gardens are a particular highlight. In early Summer the world-famous rose garden, home to the National Collection of Pre-1900 Shrub Roses, is in bloom. Join Garden Guides on a themed daily walk to learn more about the flora and fauna at Mottisfont. There are also babbling brooks, woodland and a children’s play area amongst the sprawling estate.
Mottisfont recommends car sharing or use of public transport where possible to avoid pressure on limited parking spaces.
