Housed in a renovated 19th-century carpet factory in Kidderminster, this unique institution, the only one of its kind in the UK, is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich heritage of carpet making. Explore the carpet collection
During the 19th century the carpet industry had been the principal employer in Kidderminster. Embark on a captivating journey that explores the artistry, industry, and cultural significance of carpets.
Explore an extensive collection of objects, archives, books and photographs relating to the carpet industry dating from the 18th Century to the present day. See carpet designs, many by significant designers such as Charles Voysey, Edouard Glorget and Bernat Klein.
Weaving demonstrations
Learn about the various carpet-making techniques, from the traditional hand-knotting methods to the development of mechanised looms. Engage with interactive exhibits that bring the carpet-making process to life.
Skilled volunteers demonstrate their expertise on 19th and 20th century looms, weaving intricate patterns on traditional Kidderminster, Wilton, and Axminster rugs.
Exhibitions
The museum displays temporary exhibitions focusing on weaving artists, and the history of textile design.
Local newspaper archive
The museum also houses over a century’s worth of original copies of the Kidderminster Shuttle newspaper, founded in 1870. These bound volumes provide detailed insights into Kidderminster life for most of the years between 1871 to 1982.
