Housed within the 12th-century Taunton Castle, the Museum of Somerset tells the story of the county from prehistory to the present day.
Discover 400 million years of local history, spread over nine themed galleries, through artefacts, interactive games, eye-catching film projections and the words and voices of Somerset people, past and present. Whether you're interested in social history, archaeology, or looking for a family day out, this child friendly museum offers a rewarding and educational experience.
What to see
Themed galleries take you on a chronological journey, starting with prehistoric fossils in the Foundation Stones Gallery, through to the development of Somerset in the 1800s. Highlights from the collection include, the 4th-century Low Ham Mosaic, 17th-century cauldrons and the Giant's Shoes worn by Joseph Sewell.
Early Medieval brooch
The museum also houses a remarkable discovery. Found by a metal detectorist in 2020, the Cheddar Brooch dates from arounds AD 800 to 900. Conservation work has restored it to its former glory, and the brooch was acquired for the museum with help from Art Fund.
Military history
Within the museum you can also visit the Somerset Military Museum. Learn about the history of the Somerset Light Infantry and other regiments connected with the county and see weapons, medals and uniforms.
Fun for all ages
The museum offers a variety of family-friendly activities, including trails, quizzes, and workshops, making it a great place to visit with children. For adults, regular talks and tours delve into local history.
