The Museum of the Order of St John tells the story of the ancient religious military Order, through to its modern-day role with first aid and the St John Ambulance.
Located in London’s Clerkenwell district, the museum is dedicated to the rich history of the Venerable Order of Saint John. Founded in Jerusalem during the Crusades, the Order began as a group of hospitaller knights who provided care for pilgrims.
Explore the history of the Order
The history of St John's Gate and the Order is interwoven with the stories of many important characters from the past, including Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, Suleiman the Magnificent, William Shakespeare, William Hogarth and Dr Samuel Johnson.
The museum's collection is a treasure trove of artefacts, including intricately decorated knights' armour, medical instruments used by the Order's early healers, and even ornate ceremonial wear.
Guided tours
The church and crypt and the historic rooms upstairs at St John’s Gate can only be visited on guided tours. Advanced booking is recommended. Other tours focus on the history of the St John Ambulance service and the personal stories of its dedicated women and men.
