The Museum of Wigan Life, housed in a Victorian building designed by Alfred Waterhouse, tells the story of Wigan and its people.
Explore Wigan's story through a fascinating mix of permanent and temporary exhibitions in the museum which housed in the former Wigan Free Public Library.
Local history
The permanent exhibition displays around 600 items from the 30,000 plus objects in its collection. Explore fine art, natural history, costume, ceramics, textiles and many social and industrial objects. Displays relate to Ancient Worlds, the history of the building, civic growth and pride, local customs, sports and the First and Second World Wars.
Research and genealogy
Looking for something or someone in particular? The Wigan local studies collections at the museum includes books and pamphlets relating to local history, maps, electoral registers, church registers on microfilm, local newspapers on microfilm and the People’s Network, giving access to the internet and genealogy services.
Community activities
The museum also plays host to various events throughout the year, from talks and workshops to special exhibitions. It also runs family-friendly craft sessions and school holiday activities.
