National Glass Centre

Sunderland
Free to all

The National Glass Centre traces the history of glass making in Sunderland and hosts international exhibitions by contemporary artists in glass and ceramics.

Glassmaking brings together Sunderland's religious, social and industrial heritage. The National Glass Centre celebrates that history, demonstrates the skill of glassblowing and provides a space to showcase contemporary glasswork and ceramics.

Industrial heritage

From its introduction to Sunderland the seventh century, glassmaking has continued to be a significant industry in the city. From stained glass windows for religious buildings to factories such as Pyrex and Hartley Woods, this rich heritage is proudly acknowledged by the centre.

Glassblowing

Have you ever seen glass being blown? Now is your chance, with three demonstrations per day, highly skilled glass makers turn molten glass into pieces of art, with a commentary so you can follow exactly what is happening. You can even get up close to the action and book a hands-on glass making experience.

Alternatively, look out for the centre's workshops, such as glass painting, glass sandcasting, glass fusing and ceramic crafts.

Contemporary art

Exhibition spaces at the centre host works by some of the world’s finest glass and ceramic artists working today. With the addition of the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art in 2018, visitors can also take in temporary exhibitions and events highlighting the best in contemporary art, with a special focus on photography, film & video, and twenty-first century media.

The National Glass Centre is a great day out for all the family, especially those looking to find something new, whilst also learning about an important craft that helped shape the cultural landscape of Sunderland.
