Reading Museum, well known for its landmark building in the centre of the city, explores local history, from Roman mosaics to a Bayeux Tapestry replica.

Located in Reading's grand Victorian Town Hall, the Reading Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in the story of Reading and its surrounding area. Founded in 1883, the museum boasts a diverse collection throughout dedicated galleries, showcasing Reading's development from its Roman roots to its modern incarnation.

Roman remains

The Silchester Gallery houses artefacts unearthed from the nearby Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum (Silchester), including mosaic floors, jewellery, fine glass and pottery, sculpture, iron tools and coins.

The Bayeux Gallery

The world-famous Bayeux Tapestry depicts the events leading up to the Norman invasion of England in 1066. Reading museum houses a full size replica of the tapestry, made by 35 skilled Victorian women embroiderers in 1885, in it own purpose built gallery.

Art and industry

Art enthusiasts can appreciate a collection of captivating artworks, while those with a sweet tooth can delve into Reading's unique biscuit industry at the Huntley & Palmers Gallery.

Learning fun for kids

Reading Museum's family-friendly galleries are accessible to all. You will find hands-on interactives, listening posts, trails, worksheets and dressing-up opportunities in the permanent galleries, and activities during the school holidays.

Reading Museum and the nearby Museum of English Rural Life have developed ‘Museums, My Way’, a series of free sessions for neurodivergent visitors of all ages. These sessions, developed with Autism Berkshire, provide a safe environment to explore both museums.
