River & Rowing Museum
With a National Art Pass you get
The River & Rowing Museum, situated on the bank of the River Thames in the regatta town of Henley, dives into riverside history with interactive exhibits.
The museum opened in 1998 with three permanent galleries devoted to the river, rowing and the history of the local area. The museum's elevated position above the river not only offers stunning views but also protects the collection from potential flooding.
Thames through time
The museum's galleries explore a wide range of topics, from the natural history of the Thames to the thrilling world of rowing. Take a look at wildlife, such as herons, butterflies and badgers, through the large windows overlooking the riverbank. Inside the gallery you will find historic rowing boats, log boats and other rivercraft.
The Piper Gallery
The museum also boasts a permanent collection of works by renowned British artist John Piper, whose artist studio was in Henley on Thames. Opened in 2016, following an Art Happens crowdfunding campaign the gallery explores Piper’s life and career. Items on display include paintings, theatre designs, ceramics, travel guides, textiles, prints and stained glass.
Messing about on boats
As well as hosting a changing programme of temporary art and photography exhibitions, it is also home to a ‘Wind in the Willows’ display which brings Kenneth Grahame's tales of the riverbank books to life using 3D models and music. A treat for all ages.
Family fun
For families, the River & Rowing Museum is a haven of fun and learning. Children can embark on exciting treasure hunts, participate in engaging workshops, and even dress up as their favorite characters from The Wind in the Willows.
