Historic Environment Scotland in Edinburgh collects, records and interprets information on the archaeological, architectural, industrial and maritime heritage of Scotland.
The lead public body was established to investigate, care for and promote Scotland’s historic environment.
Millions of items, including photographs, maps, drawings and documents are made available online, through exhibitions, publications and in the search room. Searchable online databases offer information on 300,000 buildings and sites, and access to 150,000 images.The organisation also looks after Scotland's national collection of historical aerial photography.
HES cares for a vast collection of over 300 properties of national significance, from the iconic ramparts of Edinburgh Castle to the mysterious Neolithic settlement of Skara Brae. HES also provides grants and resources to support conservation efforts across the country, ensuring that these irreplaceable landmarks are preserved for future generations.
