National Galleries Scotland: Modern in Edinburgh is in fact two galleries which house Scotland's national collection of modern and contemporary art.
Comprising two sculpture parks and two galleries, Modern One and Modern Two, this renowned institution houses an impressive collection of Modern and Contemporary artworks from Scottish and international artists. Spanning various mediums including painting, sculpture, photography, and video, National Galleries Scotland: Modern showcases the evolution of art from the early 20th century to the present day.
Modern One
Adapted in 1984, the gallery was formerly the John Watson’s School, an institute for fatherless children. Discover the gallery’s collection of contemporary art and see displays, shows and installations from the leading artists of today.
Modern Two
Take a journey through experimentation, abstraction, and mind-bending creativity through artworks exploring new forms and expressions emerging in the late 19th and early 20th century. Highlights include pieces by Picasso, Miró, Monet and Warhol.
Visit Paolozzi’s studio
Modern Two also houses a recreation of Eduardo Paolozzi’s Chelsea studio with sculptures, models, books, toys and even his bed. A famous sculptor in post-war Britain, Paolozzi grew up in Edinburgh before moving to London. The gallery’s restaurant is also named after him.
Wander through the Sculpture Park
Enjoy the serene surroundings of the sculpture parks, where you can appreciate large-scale works by renowned artists such as Henry Moore, Rachel Whiteread, Tony Cragg and Barbara Hepworth. The lawn at the front of the Modern One building was landscaped to a design by Charles Jencks to create Landform Ueda.
