Somerset Rural Life Museum
With a National Art Pass you get
Discover the county's rich rural history through exhibits on farming, crafts, and social life from the 1800s onwards at the Somerset Rural Life Museum in Glastonbury.
The museum is located just below Glastonbury Tor, on the site of the former Abbey Farm, which was once part of the vast estates of Glastonbury Abbey. Today, the farmhouse and former farm buildings are home to galleries showcasing the lives of Somerset's rural communities over the last two centuries.
Explore the Farmhouse Galleries
Take a walk around the two Farmyard galleries, one depicting the working village, highlighting rural and domestic trades, the other gallery focussing on the history of food production and farming. Discover more aspects of rural life through interactive exhibits, including themes like Creating, Learning, Believing, Celebrating, and Remembering.
Visit the Abbey Barn
Still in use until 1972, the magnificent 14th-century Abbey Barn is one of the West Country’s finest buildings and the centrepiece of the site. Admire the stonework (mostly locally-quarried limestone) fine carvings and magnificent roof of this historic landmark.
Family fun
Children can enjoy the farmyard, interactive exhibits, and museum trails. There are also picnic areas and outdoor spaces such as the orchard for families to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
Events and activities
The museum often hosts seasonal events and demonstrations, such as wassailing and cider-making. You can also sign up to craft workshops and courses, or attend exhibitions, talks and tours.
