Free entry

The Beacon Museum traces the rich history of this fascinating corner of the Western Lake District through excellent interactive displays.

Take a journey through the region's history, particularly its maritime past. Between Whitehaven’s mines and Harbour, the museum tells the story of historic Cumberland, through hands-on themed displays and virtual reality experiences.

Explore the galleries

Spread over four floors, the museum hosts a full programme of exhibitions all year round, ranging from local community exhibitions to national exhibitions such as Wildlife Photographer of the Year. Local history features heavily, with interactive displays that bring stories to life, including a digital Iron Age sword maker and a chance to join the crew of the Maria Lowther ship.

Take in the view

Enjoy panoramic views of the town and harbour from the fourth floor Viewing Gallery. Powerful telescopes and digital displays will help you find out about the town’s development and geology.

Play in the Pop Culture Gallery

Step back into the recent past and see some iconic objects from the mid to late 20th-century. Ride a Chopper bike, play Connect 4 and even present the weather forecast.

Attend an event

The museum offers a variety of activities to participate in, such as creative workshops, themed walks, book clubs and special kids events. Alternatively you can just relax and enjoy some refreshments at the Howling Wolf Café.
