Developed as a second venue to nearby Newlyn Art Gallery, The Exchange in the Cornish town of Penzance is a dazzling urban contemporary art space.

The development enabled the original gallery to extend its ambitious programme across two sites, presenting a rolling calendar of exhibitions and events. Past displays have included a major exhibition of large abstract paintings by Robyn Denny, a group exhibition, Gäa: Holistic Science and Wisdom Tradition featuring artists such as Abel Rodriguez, and Surf School, celebrating the craft behind surfing in Cornwall.

Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange has also staged major installations outside its sites, including a project by Lahore-based artist, Imran Qureshi at Truro Cathedral and a sound installation by Janet Cardiff at Richmond Chapel. An additional gallery space at The Exchange, The Engine Room, presents community based exhibitions and projects such as the Young People's Art Prize.

Converted from the town's former telephone exchange, The Exchange has an undulating glass façade running the entire length of the building. The glass panels are illuminated by a light display designed by artist Peter Freeman which changes depending on the exhibitions running.
