Based in the historic city of Oxford, the Story Museum aims to inspire young minds through the power of storytelling.
The museum reopened in May 2021 following a major redevelopment working with 50 designers, makers and creatives to bring stories to life in 10 immersive galleries. The new inspiring spaces include the Whispering Wood – an enchanting indoor forest where every tree has a story to tell – the Enchanted Library – a library that immerses you in a story – and a Learning Studio inspired by Hogwarts. These unique interactive spaces connect visitors, particularly children, with a vast collection of stories.
The museum is particularly passionate about supporting the young local community – in Oxford 26% of children live below the poverty line and the museum has used stories to help improve early literacy and later, an independent motivation to read.
In 2022, inspired by the isolation of the Covid-19 pandemic, the museum launched the innovative Minecraft Museum project, working with teenagers to create a digital version of the Enchanted Library gallery space.
The Story Museum was a finalist for Art Fund Museum of the Year 2022.
