Free entry and free exhibitions

Tullie House is a museum, art gallery and community hub in Carlisle, hosting exhibitions of regional, national and international importance.

Set in beautiful gardens, Old Tullie House is a Grade I Listed building that was built in 1689. Now a museum and art gallery, it holds collections of fine and decorative art, human history and an Arts Council England Designated natural science collection.

Explore the Roman Frontier

Discover the fascinating history of Hadrian's Wall and the Roman occupation of Cumbria through interactive exhibits and artefacts. See displays of Roman coins, pottery, and military equipment from the museum’s collection.

Fine and decorative art

The museum boasts a significant collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings, and works by Arthur Hughes and Stanley Spencer. It also houses Arts and Crafts Movement pieces, Japanese prints and Chinese ceramics. Not all pieces are on display but you can make an appointment to view specific works if they are available.

Cumbrian costume

One of the newest galleries, The Costume Collection, showcases over 300 years of Cumbrian women’s history, and is one of the largest dedicated costume galleries in the north.

Family activities

The museum offers a variety of family-friendly activities, including interactive exhibits, workshops, and events. Children can explore the hands-on Discovery Zone, learn about art and get creative in the monthly Art Explorers club, and join in special activities during school holidays.
