Art Funded by you

1) Blown-away Vase, Over the Edge, Firework XII, 2008; 2) Vase: Water of Greenness, 2008

Elizabeth Fritsch, 2008

Fritsch was born into a Welsh family and grew up in Shropshire on the Welsh border. However the museum has only had one modest example of her work until now. These two vases exemplify Fritsch's great skill in hand-building. Both vases embody an interest in the elements: air and fire in Fireworks XII, whose pattern serves to dematerialise the form, and water in Water of Greenness. The latter has a further layer of meaning, almost a ritual quality, in its reference to the myth of Osiris, associated with water and the colour green through his role as Egyptian god of fertility and rebirth.
