1) Peripheral; 2) Peripheral Stories and Peripheral Landscapes 1-5
Hala Elkoussy, 2005
This is an installation by a key artist from Cairo and comprises 'Peripheral Stories', a video installation and 'Peripheral Landscapes 1-5', a series of five wallpaper prints. The work presents multiple stories of life in contemporary Cairo in a manner which resists a traditional narrative arc to open up a variety of perspectives on the Egyptian metropolis. The multilayered stories chart the many concerns of the city’s dwellers, old and young – sexual politics, work, money, social mobility, religion. This work opens up the interpretation of the museum’s Egyptology collection in offering an international and contemporary context. Insight into the contemporary urban experience in Egypt may be a prompt for Bristol's audiences to consider the meaning of globalisation and where Bristol fits in. Presented by the Art Fund through Art Fund International.
