Ann Stokes was one of the most distinctive of modern potters, creating bold, vigorous, colourful pieces, often impressive in size, that typically express her love of the natural world – animals, birds, fish and trees were among her favourite motifs. This gift to three institutions has been made by her son Philip. The most spectacular piece (at York) is a wall-mounted swan with a wingspan of more than two metres.
